Apple will use OLED displays on all iPhone models sold from 2025, including the cheaper iPhone SE model

It has been reported that Apple plans to equip its next-generation

iPhone SE , expected to be released in 2025, with an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display made by Chinese technology company BOE and South Korea's LG Display . If this comes to fruition, it will mark the end of the LCD display that has long been used in low-cost iPhones.

Apple has used LCD displays since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, but in 2017 it first adopted OLED displays with the iPhone X. Since then, it has expanded the use of OLED displays in higher-end models. At the time of writing, the only iPhone in the lineup that uses an LCD display is the budget iPhone SE.

However, it has been reported that Apple will use OLED displays for all iPhones from 2025 onwards. The 4th generation iPhone SE, expected to be released in 2025, will use the OLED display from the iPhone 13, which will be manufactured by China's BOE and South Korea's LG Display.

As a result, all Japanese companies will withdraw from supplying iPhone displays. According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp supplied approximately 200 million LCD displays for iPhones per year around 2015, but by 2023, this figure will have plummeted to about 20 million, about one-tenth of its peak. At the time of writing, JDI is supplying small OLED displays for the Apple Watch.

According to a survey by British market research company Omdia, shipments of OLED displays for smartphones are expected to surpass LCD displays for the first time in 2024. The graph below, showing shipments of smartphone displays, shows that shipments of OLED displays and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) will be tied at about 700 million units in mid-2023, and that shipments of both will be tied at about 700 million units, after which OLED display shipments are expected to surpass LCDs.

The fourth-generation iPhone SE is expected to replace the traditional Touch ID with Face ID, have a USB Type-C port, and an action button. In addition, the display size is expected to increase from 4.7 inches to 6.06 inches due to the elimination of the home button and the full-screen design. Overseas media MacRumors predicts that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will be released in January or March 2025.
