How to continue playing online matches in Mario Kart 7 even after Nintendo 3DS online services end
by
On April 8, 2024, Nintendo officially ended online services for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. This means that online-compatible titles on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U can no longer be officially played, but there are players who continue to play the Nintendo 3DS's online battle mode even after the online service ends in order to play ' Mario Kart 7 ' on the Nintendo 3DS.

On April 8, the day of the shutdown, Mario Kart 7 players Fishguy6564 and Marioiscool246 tried to find a technical solution to stay connected to the servers.
So they identified the code that prevented online matches from launching when the online service was terminated, and created a patch to prevent this. With this patch, online matches will not be forcibly terminated even if the service is terminated.

Just before the service ended, the two men disconnected their Nintendo 3DS from the Internet, used a patch to establish a connection to the router, and confirmed that they were able to connect to the online battle mode again. Of course, if Nintendo shuts down the servers completely when the service ended, online battles would no longer be possible, so they were quite nervous at the moment the service ended, but as a result, the connection to the server was maintained even after the service ended, and they were able to play online battles without any problems.
Fishguy6564 has released the following movie showing him playing online matches of 'Mario Kart 7' on his Nintendo 3DS after the online service ended.
On 04/08/2024 at 6:30 PM EST, @marioiscool246 and I deployed 2 bots in an attempt to keep the last lobby on Nintendo Network alive. With a patch that kept us from disconnecting, we raced for over a month until Gears froze yesterday. Here is the beginning of the entire session. pic.twitter.com/F8fYzQivwd

However, after the 13,151st race, Marioiscool246 dropped out due to a malfunction of his Nintendo 3DS. At the time of writing, only Fishguy6564's Nintendo 3DS was able to access the online server for 'Mario Kart 7.'
Fishguy6564 said he has connected his Nintendo 3DS to an uninterruptible power supply and put it away in a storeroom. Fishguy6564's Nintendo 3DS may break down for some reason or lose its Internet connection completely, but in theory, as long as the server exists, you can play the online battle mode forever. However, Fishguy6564 said, 'Eventually, there will come a time when I think I should end the service for my own convenience.'
