On May 21, 2024, Microsoft announced a new product category called 'Copilot + PC' that integrates AI into PCs, and unveiled 'Recall' as a highlight of the AI feature. Recall is a function that periodically takes screenshots of users' PC operations, scans them with optical character recognition (OCR), and stores them in a database, allowing users to check their operation history later.

However, recording all actions means that confidential information such as passwords and bank account numbers entered by users is also stored without exception, and there is a risk that information may be leaked due to hacking if it is stored on an external server. Such concerns led to discussions about the risk of Recall around the world, including an investigation by the UK's data monitoring agency. Microsoft later announced a delay in the release of Recall and promised to review the feature.

About two months after announcing the delay, Microsoft announced that it would once again offer Recall, reporting that it would be available for Windows Insiders starting in October 2024.

In response to the report, Microsoft said, 'We are committed to providing our customers with a reliable and secure Recall experience on Copilot+ PCs. As we previously communicated on June 13, we have adjusted our release approach to leverage the valuable expertise of the Windows Insider community before making Recall available to all Copilot+ PCs. Security remains our top priority, and we will blog with more details once Recall is available for Windows Insiders.'

In order to use Recall, you will need a device that meets the Copilot+ PC system requirements.
