Founded in San Francisco in 2006, Twitter moved its headquarters to the city's Mid-Market district in 2012. Later, when businessman Elon Musk acquired Twitter in November 2022, it was reported that the company had not paid rent for its San Francisco headquarters and had set up a sleeping room for employees in a corner of the headquarters office in order to implement radical cost reductions.

Still, Musk declared in 2023 that 'a lot of people are offering big incentives to move our headquarters out of San Francisco, but we're not going to move.'

However, Musk has announced that he will relocate the headquarters of SpaceX and SpaceX from California to Austin, Texas in July 2024. As the reason for the relocation, Musk cited Governor Gavin Newsom signing an LGBTQ-related bill on July 15, 2024.

Musk criticized the bill, which includes a clause that prohibits educational institution officials from disclosing a child's gender identity to others without the child's consent, saying, 'Many families and businesses will leave California because of this law. No one should be able to allow the state to take their children away.' Musk claims that his young son underwent a sex change due to gender ideology, and he strongly opposes the California bill, calling it 'a bill that separates children from their parents at a time when their thoughts about gender identity are unclear.'

X CEO Linda Yaccarino sent an email to employees on August 5, 2024, stating, 'We will close our San Francisco headquarters and relocate employees to our existing office in San Jose, California, as well as to a new office to be opened in Palo Alto, California.' 'The headquarters closure will take place within the next few weeks.' According to Yaccarino, the Palo Alto office is an office dedicated to engineering shared with xAI, an AI startup owned by Musk.

'This is an important decision that will affect many of you, but it's what's best for X in the long run,' Yaccarino told employees.

In response, Musk said on August 6, 2024, 'We have no choice. We can no longer operate in San Francisco.'
