In the 2024 US presidential election, incumbent President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the race, and Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to be nominated as the Democratic candidate to succeed President Biden. However, Grok informs users that 'the deadline to vote in the 2024 US presidential election has passed in Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.'
According to The Guardian, Grok also told users, 'So if you're planning on running for president in these states, you might want to make sure you're not late. Even if you don't run, there will still be a presidential election in 2028.'
In addition, the voting deadline in Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington, which Grok listed, has not yet arrived at the time of writing. Therefore, it is still possible to change candidates, and Harris can run for president without any problems.
In response to Grok's false reporting, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Oliver, Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmitt, and Washington Secretary of State Simon Hobbs have jointly called on Musk to update Grok with accurate information about the presidential election.
Minnesota Secretary of State Simon criticized, 'This misinformation has reached millions of X users. This information has been shared and spread among users multiple times.' The secretaries of state also said, 'Grok must make immediate changes to ensure that voters have access to the correct information,' and argued, 'Similar to OpenAI, which operates ChatGPT, when users ask about the election, they should be directed to the website '
X has not commented on the letter from the Secretary of State.
