The victim of the ransomware this time is the non-profit organization OneBlood. According to IT media BleepingComputer, a VMware ESXi server was attacked and encrypted, affecting the entire OneBlood system.

Due to delays in blood supplies, OneBlood has asked the more than 250 hospitals it serves to activate blood shortage protocols. The AABB disaster response headquarters is supporting OneBlood, but some blood types and platelets are in short supply.

Affected states include Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

According to IT media The Register, no one has issued a statement regarding this crime. Some media outlets, including The Register, have reported that 'this incident is very similar to the situation faced by the UK's National Health Service (NHS).' The NHS was hit by a cyber attack in June 2024, leaving several hospitals using NHS services unable to perform blood transfusions or surgeries.
