Nintendo strips Splatoon 3's first official world championship title due to racist comments online



In mid-April 2024, Nintendo held the

The Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024 was held over two days on April 13th and 14th, 2024, where teams that had won representative matches held around the world competed for the title of world champion. There were six participating teams: North America, Australia/New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Europe, and Taiwan. Japan was represented by Phantom Thief , representing the Kanto region.

The winner of the tournament was Jackpot, representing North America, but in June 2024, screenshots began to spread showing members of Jackpot making racist remarks on X (formerly Twitter) and Discord, such as likening black people to monkeys.




Later, on July 24, 2024, Nintendo announced on the official website of the Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024 that 'the winning North American representative, Jackpot, has been removed from this page due to violations of the Community Guidelines.' Photos of Jackpot have also been removed from the official website.



In addition, the X account operated by Nintendo of America, a US subsidiary of Nintendo, also released the following latest information regarding the Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024: 'We have discovered that some members of Team Jackpot, who won the recent Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024, engaged in conduct that did not comply with the Community Guidelines while playing Splatoon 3. As a result, Jackpot's victory has been deemed invalid and the team will not be able to receive any trophies related to the event. In addition, the in-game splash tag banner commemorating the victory will be adjusted in a future software update. Nintendo values its players and community, and takes its responsibility to comply with the Community Guidelines seriously,' it said, invalidating Jackpot's victory.




The Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024 was originally scheduled to take place during Nintendo Live 2024 in January 2024, but the event was canceled after receiving multiple threatening messages. As a result, the Splatoon 3 World Championship 2024 will take place in April 2024.
