I tried the cup meal 'Nissin Mysterious Eel Bowl' using 'Plant-Based Eel Mysterious Eel', which reproduces the texture and appearance of eel using plant materials

From Nissin's '

Cup Meshi ' series, which allows you to eat hot rice in 5 minutes by pouring hot water, the ' Nissin Mystery Eel Bowl ' using plant-based 'Mystery Eel' will be available only in the Kanto Koshinetsu, Chubu, and Kinki regions from Monday, July 15, 2024. The mysterious eel is made using Nissin's soy protein processing technology to reproduce the texture and appearance of real eel, and the ' Plant-Based Eel Mystery Eel ' sold on Thursday, July 11 was so popular that 5,000 sets were sold out in an instant. I was curious about what the cup meal using such mysterious eel tasted like, so I actually bought one to check it out.

The package for the 'Nissin Mystery Eel Bowl' looks like this. It says 'No eel used' in prominent letters.

A small packet of 'special sweet and spicy sauce' is attached to the top of the lid.

Mystery eel is a soy protein processed product made using the same soy protein processing technology that is also used to make mystery meat.

Looking at the names of ingredients, the ingredients of the mysterious eel (soy protein processed product) are granular soy protein, vegetable oil, powdered soy protein, mirin, soy sauce, and others, and it can be seen that the mysterious eel itself does not contain any animal products. However, the seasoning ingredients include lard and sea bream seasoning, so the entire 'Nissin Mysterious Eel Bowl' does not contain any animal ingredients.

Calories per serving: 387kcal.

If you peel the lid off to the dotted line, you can see that there is a cube of 'mysterious eel' inside.

When you take out the mysterious eel before pouring hot water, it looks like this. You can see that there are burnt parts on the surface and the back side looks like eel skin.

Put the mystery eel back in, pour hot water up to the inside line, and leave it for 5 minutes while heating the special sweet and spicy sauce on the lid.

After 5 minutes, remove the lid and add the special sweet and spicy sauce and mix well.

This completes the 'Nissin Mysterious Eel Bowl.'

The mysterious eel looks like this, and although it looks similar to eel, it's not exactly the same. First, when I tried eating the mysterious eel by itself, I could definitely taste the sweet and spicy sauce that tasted like eel sauce, and the refreshing flavor of Japanese pepper that reminded me of unadon. On the other hand, as I chewed it, the taste of soy gradually came out, and I realized that it was something different from eel. The texture is also well-defined between the soft meat and the smooth skin, but the impression is that the 'texture of soup soaked into the fibers' is closer to that of koya tofu rather than the fluffy texture of eel.

Next, try eating it with rice, and the flavor of the soup and sauce that has soaked into the rice is added, and the texture blends in with the rice, making the whole dish look more like unadon. At least with the rice alone, it's difficult to tell the difference from unadon, and if you were blindfolded and given the dish without knowing anything about it, some people might not even realize it's mystery eel. If you want to experience the atmosphere of unadon, we recommend eating it all at once with the rice.

The 'Nissin Mystery Eel Bowl' will be available for purchase only in the Kanto, Koshinetsu, Chubu, and Kinki regions from Monday, July 15, 2024, with a suggested retail price of 369 yen (excluding tax).
