Even verified reviews on Amazon can be fake

Among the reviews of products sold on Amazon, there are 'fake' reviews in which reviewers have received compensation from the seller and given the product a high rating. Amazon claims to be investigating reviews in response to reports from users in order to eliminate such reviews, but it has been pointed out that these investigations may not be very effective.

Amazon specifically prohibits paid reviews and asks you to report any reviews you believe to be inappropriate.

However, in reality, there are many users who post reviews in exchange for payment, and some of these reviews continue to appear as legitimate.

Christoph Hoffmann, a reporter for PCWorld, a technology media company, reported that he accepted the seller's proposal to write a five-star review in exchange for nearly double the purchase price, and actually tried it. According to Hoffmann, if you write a five-star review and send the seller your order number and a screenshot of the review, the reward will be transferred to your PayPal account, and Hoffmann received the money within two hours of execution. The seller was a Chinese company. Hoffmann reported his review, but Amazon replied that there was no problem. Hoffmann said that this meant that 'even if the review has been verified, it may be suspicious.'

According to the New York Times, the methods are becoming more sophisticated, with some sellers even asking customers to leave negative reviews of other companies' products.

'Reviews are corrupted by sellers using incentives such as free products or gift cards in exchange for positive reviews, and the problem has been exacerbated by the rise of AI tools that make it easier to create convincing fake reviews,' TechSpot said.
