According to Vietnam National Broadcasting (VNA), as of June 15, three out of five undersea cables were experiencing problems, causing slower internet speeds across the country.

At the time of writing, five submarine cables are in operation in Vietnam: Asia-Africa Euro 1 (AAE-1), Asia-America Gateway (AAG), Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG), Asia-Middle East-West Europe 3 (SEA-ME-WE3: SMW3), and TGN Intra-Asia (TGN-IA). The cables that are currently experiencing problems are IA, APG, and AAE-1.

The IA malfunction occurred on June 13, 2024, while the APG and AAE-1 were found to have experienced problems on March 10 and May 23, respectively.

It has not been reported whether communications on these three undersea cables have been completely or partially cut off, and there is no timetable for when they will be restored.

Nguyen Lam, an internet user from Ho Chi Minh City, told media: 'Vietnamese websites still load very quickly, but when I open a foreign page it takes around 20 seconds.'

The cause of this latest cable failure is still unknown, but it is thought to be probably simple deterioration or an accidental accident, unlike a previous incident in which an undersea cable in the Red Sea was severed in an attack by Yemen's pro-Iranian Houthi militia .

Although Vietnam does have land internet cables, currently most of its internet is provided by undersea cables with a total capacity of around 62Tbps.

To ensure stable internet communications, the Vietnamese government has announced plans to lay up to six new undersea internet cables by 2030 as part of its 2021-30 information and communications infrastructure plan with an eye toward 2050.
