The Safety and Security Committee was established in May 2024 and is led by CEO Sam Altman. It will evaluate the company's internal processes and safety measures over a 90-day period and make recommendations to the board of directors, the results of which will be made public.

Nakasone attended St. John's University and was commissioned as a military intelligence officer through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1986. He also holds a Master's in Systems Management from the University of Southern California and is a graduate of the Defense Intelligence University and the United States Military Academy.

After serving as an intelligence officer in Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea, and other countries, he was promoted to brigadier general in 2012 and served as deputy director for interregional policy at the Joint Chiefs of Staff and deputy commander of the Army Cyber Command. In 2018, he was appointed director of the NSA and commander of the Cyber Command by President Trump.

According to the news site Fast Company, Nakasone served as Cyber Command commander, fighting foreign powers attempting to interfere in the election, for just over five years before handing over to his successor, Air Force Gen. Timothy Howe, in February 2024.

In 2020, the NSA discovered that Chinese military hackers had infiltrated Japan's secret defense networks. At the time, Nakasone was the director of the NSA and commander of its Cyber Command, and he visited Japan with Deputy National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger to hold an emergency meeting.

Senator Mark Warner, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told the news site Axios, 'Having John on the board is a great win for OpenAI, as he would have had many options when he left the White House. John brings much-needed expertise in cybersecurity in general, election security in particular, and countering China. He has a very real view of the fact that China is posing a different challenge than we've seen in the past.'

'Mr. Nakasone's unparalleled experience in cybersecurity will guide us as we achieve our mission of using AI to benefit all humanity,' said OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor.
