OpenAI reports that its annual revenue has more than doubled to $5.33 billion in the past six months

The Information, an overseas media outlet, announced that OpenAI's annualized sales revenue has more than doubled to $3.4 billion (approximately 533 billion yen) in the past six months. It has been pointed out that the majority of OpenAI's revenue comes from subscription services and APIs that it provides itself, as OpenAI's indirect profits from providing AI products through other companies are small.

OpenAI's monthly revenue in May 2024 is reportedly projected to be $3.4 billion in annualized revenue, double the $1.6 billion it generated six months ago, and more than triple the $1 billion it generated a year ago.

OpenAI receives a share of the revenue from the large-scale language models it provides through its enterprise cloud platform Azure from Microsoft, but the amount is only about $200 million (about 31 billion yen).

Therefore, it is speculated that the majority of OpenAI's revenue comes from ChatGPT's subscription service and from developers who use the company's large-scale language models in their apps and services.

An OpenAI spokesperson told The Information that the report was 'inaccurate,' but did not explain how it differed.

OpenAI, which is on a roll, is also aggressively pursuing a human resources strategy, and on June 10, 2024, it announced that it had appointed Sarah Friar, former CEO of local social networking site

Nextdoor , as its chief financial officer, and Kevin Weil, who served as president of products and operations at satellite imagery service Planet Labs, as its chief product officer.

'Sarah and Kevin bring deep experience that will help OpenAI scale, develop a strategy for our next phase of growth, and ensure the team has the resources it needs to continue to grow,' said CEO Sam Altman, indicating that the appointments will further accelerate OpenAI's growth.

OpenAI is also preparing its infrastructure, and on June 11th it was announced that it would adopt Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Oracle's AI infrastructure. The impact of this news on the industry was so great that, despite Oracle's fourth quarter 2024 financial results falling short of expectations, its stock price soared when the partnership with OpenAI was revealed.

'The race to develop the world's best large-scale language models is on, driving endless demand for Oracle's second-generation AI infrastructure,' said Larry Ellison, Oracle Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. 'Leaders like OpenAI choose Oracle's cloud because OCI delivers the world's fastest, most cost-effective AI infrastructure.'
