OpenAI is reportedly in talks to raise $140 billion in funding, with venture capitalists leading the way with $140 billion in funding and Microsoft also joining

It has been reported that OpenAI is seeking to raise funds at a valuation of $100 billion (approximately 14.46 trillion yen). OpenAI leads the industry with advanced AI chat services such as 'ChatGPT', and is rumored to be releasing a high-performance model called 'Strawberry' in the fall of 2024, so expectations for growth are high. However, some have pointed out that the valuation is too high considering the company's annual sales, and investors are taking on considerable risks.

According to reports, OpenAI is aiming to raise billions of dollars in its Series D funding round. Its valuation is estimated to exceed $100 billion, which would exceed its estimated valuation of $29 billion in 2023 and $80 billion in early 2024.

The round is being led by venture capital firm Thrive Capital with $1 billion in funding, and Microsoft, which has provided OpenAI with $13 billion in cloud infrastructure and funding to date, is also expected to participate.

Bloomberg reported that 'OpenAI has been in talks since at least December 2024 to raise funds at a valuation of more than $100 billion, people familiar with the matter said.' According to people familiar with the matter, OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer Sarah Frear acknowledged the existence of the fundraising and told employees that the company also plans to make a tender offer to allow employees to sell some of their shares.

It has been reported that OpenAI's annual recurring revenue exceeded $2 billion (approximately 290 billion yen) as of February 2024. On the other hand, there are concerns about future profitability as it is said to be spending about $1 billion per month, and it is not expected to grow enough to meet the valuation of $100 billion, which is risky for investors.

Frear reportedly told employees that part of the new round of funding would be used to expand computing power. In March 2024, it was reported that OpenAI was partnering with Microsoft to build an artificial intelligence supercomputer with millions of processors, which is expected to cost as much as $100 billion to build.
