Mashima was born on March 22, 1954 in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture.
In 1972, she joined the Nihon Gekijo Dancing Team, but the team was disbanded by the Nihon Gekijo in 1981. She found a new calling in musicals and choreography.
It was undoubtedly 'Matsuken Samba II' that made Mashima's name known nationwide.
