Source code of the first internet search engine, Archie, discovered and restored to modern times

Archie was the world's first Internet search engine, developed in 1989. Archie had disappeared from the Internet for a long time, but the technology-related YouTube channel '

The Serial Port ' managed to obtain the source code of Archie and build a 'search site using Archie.'

Archie is an Internet search engine developed by computer scientist Alan Emtage in 1989 that can search for information on FTP servers and the World Wide Web (WWW). Archie is considered the world's first Internet search engine, and Emtage was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2017 in recognition of his achievements in developing Archie.

However, as of 2024, there are no search systems using Archie. Therefore, The Serial Port made a plan to find Archie's source code and binary data and restore Archie.

Emtage testified that he had donated a tape containing Archie's data to the Computer History Museum , but he said that he could not find any information about Archie when he searched the Computer History Museum's database. So he searched the archives of the official website of Bunyip, a software company run by Emtage, using the Wayback Machine. As a result, some information about Archie was obtained.

For example, the Archie product page states that 'Archie was originally developed for tracking anonymous FTP but has been extended for use on the WWW' and 'Archie's four main functions are data collection, data sharing, indexing, and searching, but it can be extended to support specific types of data.'

Also, Archie's

pricing page lists a regular price of $6,000 and an educational price of $4,000.

However, the Wayback Machine did not contain any source code for Archie. The Serial Port also contacted developers of Archie-related products and Facebook communities, but was unsuccessful. As a last resort, The Serial Port decided to contact the administrators of the servers listed in the '

Servers running Archie' list that was archived on the Bunyip official website.

After contacting the server administrators, it was discovered that the source code and binary files of Archie had been left at the 'Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical Computational Modeling' at the University of Warsaw, which managed the server 'archie.icm.edu.pl'. The Serial Port received the files and, with permission from Mr. MTAGE, succeeded in building a 'search site using Archie'.

The 'Archie search site' is available at the following link.

To actually try a search using Archie, just enter the search word in the section marked 'Text to search for' and click 'Search'.

The search results will be displayed as follows:
