The European Commission's first concern was Facebook and Instagram's 'recommendation' algorithms, which it said could reinforce the so-called ' rabbit hole ' effect and pose 'potential risks to the exercise of and respect for the fundamental right to children's physical and mental well-being'.

They also point out that age verification tools to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content may not be adequate.

News site The Guardian reported that one official said 'some of the restrictions are very easy to get around' and that the committee wanted to know how Meta assessed whether these measures were effective and appropriate.

This will be the first time the DSA has investigated TikTok over the protection of minors, following its investigation in February 2024.
