On November 17, 2023, OpenAI suddenly announced the resignation and departure of CEO Altman. This sudden dismissal commotion is believed to have been caused by a conflict between CEO Altman and OpenAI's board of directors, and it was reported that one of the directors, Mr. Satskivar, led the dismissal of CEO Altman.

Is the resignation of OpenAI's former CEO Sam Altman due to a dispute with chief scientist Ilya Satkivar over 'AI safety'?

Altman returned to the company as CEO shortly after. At the same time, the board of directors was also replaced, and Satskever resigned from the board. After that, he served as OpenAI's chief scientist.

Satskivar wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that, 'After nearly 10 years at OpenAI, I have decided to leave the company. OpenAI's journey to date has been nothing short of miraculous, and I am confident that under the excellent research leadership of CEO Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman, CTO Mira Murati, and Jacob Paczowski, they will build safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI). It has been an honor and a privilege to work with you all, and I will truly miss you all. Farewell, and thank you for everything. What's next... I am excited about a project that is personally meaningful to me. More details to come.'

Satskever also posted the following photo to X: (from left) Paczowski, Brockman, Satskever, Altman, and Murati.

Altman said, 'Ilya and OpenAI have decided to go their separate ways. Ilya was one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light in our field, and a dear friend. His talent and vision are well known. His warmth and compassion are less known, but no less important. OpenAI would not have been possible without him. While he is working on things that are personally meaningful to him, I am forever grateful for what he has done at OpenAI and am committed to completing the mission we began together. I am blessed to have been close to such a purely amazing genius for so long, and someone who is so committed to getting the best future for humanity.' Altman also revealed that Pachowski will succeed Satskiver.

'Together, we charted the path for what OpenAI will become today,' said President Brockman. When we started in late 2015, OpenAI was a nonprofit with a mission to make AGI a success, but we didn't have a credible plan for how to achieve it. In the early days, Ilya and I spent countless hours thinking hard about every aspect of our culture, technical direction, and strategy. And we realized that to build a supercomputer on an unprecedented scale, we needed to raise a lot more money than anyone had imagined. We raised money together as a nonprofit, and we raised more than others thought possible, but it still wasn't close to what was needed. We proposed to create a for-profit organization for that mission, and even after that came true, we continued to adjust and shape what the company represented, focusing on the AGI mission and tackling the difficult practical problems of how to progress every day.
