Taiwan-based chipmaker TSMC's sales in March 2024 were NT$195.21 billion (approximately JPY 930 billion), up 7.5% from the previous month and 34.3% from the same month last year. As mentioned above, sales from January to March 2024 were NT$592.64 billion, up 16.5% from the same period last year.
TSMC had a poor year in 2023, reporting its first revenue decline in four years, but exceeded market expectations in 2024. According to market participants, January to March is a slow period for tech companies after the year-end shopping season, but strong sales of chips for AI and data centers contributed to TSMC's revenue growth.
TSMC manufactures chips used in products by companies such as Apple and NVIDIA, and has seen its sales grow rapidly in recent years as demand for chips has surged due to the increase in AI products. TSMC expects to continue to regain solid growth in 2024, with annual sales expected to grow at least 20% year-over-year.
However, analysts have pointed out that the major earthquake that occurred on April 3, 2024 may cause production delays, which may affect second-quarter sales. However, TSMC has explained that there is no significant damage to its facilities and has reported that recovery is proceeding smoothly, so analysts expect that the company will make up the majority of its sales in the third quarter and achieve its full-year growth target.
TSMC plans to expand its manufacturing bases not only in Taiwan but also in other countries, and on April 9th, it announced that it would build its third factory in Phoenix, Arizona, with a US subsidy. This has raised questions, such as 'Where will they get the large amount of water needed for semiconductor manufacturing in Arizona, which is suffering from water shortages?' However, according to state officials, there is no problem as the water will be recycled and other methods will be used. TSMC also has a factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, and is currently building a second factory to handle the first half of the manufacturing process. In addition, it has been reported that they will also build a third factory to handle the second half of the process.
