Windows security updates play an important role in protecting users from vulnerabilities discovered in the OS, and Microsoft releases security updates for Windows 10 and other operating systems once a month as ' Windows Update .' However, support for Windows 10 has been decided to end on October 14, 2025, and as a general rule, support will not be available after that date.

On the other hand, in December 2023, Microsoft stated, 'We understand that in some circumstances it may be difficult to migrate the OS before the end of support,' and announced the launch of the ESU program, which would allow users to receive updates for three years.

Microsoft announced the corporate fees for receiving this ESU program on April 2, 2024. According to Microsoft, the fee will be $61 (about 9,200 yen) per device in the first year, $122 (about 18,500 yen) in the second year, and $244 (about 37,000 yen) in the third year.

The ESU program was also offered for Windows 7, which ended support in 2020, but at that time only corporations or organizations were able to receive the program. However, the ESU program for Windows 10 can be implemented not only by corporations and organizations but also by individual users. Microsoft has stated that the fee for the ESU program for individual users will be 'announced in the second half of 2024.'

Microsoft has also announced that it will offer the ESU program for its technology solution for educational institutions, Microsoft Education , with the cost being $1 (approximately 150 yen) per device in the first year, $2 (approximately 300 yen) in the second year, and $4 (approximately 600 yen) in the third year.

Corporate and organizational users can purchase a license activation key subscription for the ESU program from October 2024, and it can be applied to one PC that will continue to use Windows 10 after October 2025. If you own multiple PCs, you will be required to subscribe separately for each PC. Microsoft says that this fee structure 'will allow educational institutions to receive the support they need.'

Microsoft also states that 'if you join the ESU program one or two years after support ends, you will be required to pay for the missed renewal years.'
