Normal smartphones have lenses and sensors arranged horizontally, so the lens must be thick in order to ensure enough length from front to back. This is the reason why the rear camera part of smartphones protrudes.
On the other hand, a periscope camera has a lens that is placed vertically as shown below and captures light by refracting it. By arranging the lens to match the width of the smartphone body, the focal length can be significantly longer than before.
The Find X7 Ultra, which appeared on January 8, 2024, is a smartphone equipped with two periscope cameras, and the focal length is said to be equivalent to 14 mm to 270 mm.
