In 2021, Google began onboarding a wider range of RMG apps in markets using existing licensing frameworks. Since then, the RMG category has continued to thrive with developers creating RMG apps for mobile, writes Karan Gambhir, director of global trust and safety partnerships at Android.
To ensure Google Play, Android's official app store, keeps up with the pace of developer innovation while promoting user safety, Google will enable support for more RMG operators and different types of RMGs. To this end, several pilot programs have been implemented. For example, Indian developers want to provide RMG apps to more users, so they seem to be implementing pilot programs to support their businesses.
Based on learnings from these pilot programs and positive feedback from users and developers, Google plans to expand the scope of RMG apps to more RMG apps, including game types and operators not covered by Google Play's existing licensing framework. We have announced that we are planning to start supporting it. RMG's extended support program is scheduled to begin in India, Brazil, and Mexico from June 2024. Additionally, this expansion program will be rolled out to more countries in the future.
The RMG expansion program will provide new business opportunities to developers around the world while continuing to prioritize user safety. To support user safety, Google Play's existing developer policies include implementing age verification to restrict RMG apps to adults and providing RMG apps only when legal under local law.
