Wi-Fi's next-generation standard 'Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 (Wi-Fi 7)' officially announced, communication speed is at least twice as fast compared to Wi-Fi 6

On January 8, 2024 local time,

the Wi-Fi Alliance announced ' Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 (Wi-Fi 7)', the next generation wireless communication standard, and Wi-Fi 7 compatible devices will work properly. We have started certification to confirm this.

Wi-Fi 7, newly announced by the Wi-Fi Alliance, will use the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands, with 6GHz offering up to 320MHz of bandwidth. The increased bandwidth means more data can be sent at once, and speeds are at least twice as fast as the previous generation Wi-Fi 6/6E.

Wi-Fi 7 also introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which allows devices to send and receive data on multiple bands simultaneously, increasing throughput, reducing latency, and improving connection stability.

Generally, Wi-Fi uses a technology called ' quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)' that converts digital packets into analog signals when transmitting data wirelessly. The conventional Wi-Fi standard used '1024 QAM,' but Wi-Fi 7 introduces 4K QAM , which improves data transfer speed by about 20% compared to the old standard.

Additionally, a feature called ``Multi-RU'' has been introduced that divides bandwidth into

resource units (RUs) and efficiently allocates them to multiple users.

According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, these improvements will not only lead to further advancements in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, but will also lead to changes in the working environment and the introduction of IoT in the industrial sector. It is said that it will be possible to realize various use cases that were difficult with conventional Wi-Fi standards. Regarding Wi-Fi 7 compatible devices, the Wi-Fi Alliance says, ``More than 233 million devices are expected to enter the market in 2024, and that number is expected to increase to 2.1 billion by 2028.'' 'Wi-Fi 7 is expected to be adopted across a wide range of ecosystems.'

'This official announcement of Wi-Fi 7 accelerates the mass adoption of Wi-Fi 7,' said Kevin Robinson, president and CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance. 'It underscores our goal to deliver cutting-edge technology that expands your horizons, delivers faster speeds, increases efficiency, and improves reliability, redefining the Wi-Fi experience for our users.' states.

Wi-Fi 7 compatible routers have already been released by companies such as Netgear, TP-Link, and Eero, but since this announcement, network equipment manufacturers have started to require certification for Wi-Fi 7 compatibility. You can receive it from Fi Alliance. Additionally, Wi-Fi 7 compatible devices are said to be backward compatible with older Wi-Fi standards such as Wi-Fi 6/6E.
