'Taito LD Game Collection' includes three classic games from the past in which you help characters with QTE while watching animations.

The Nintendo Switch software ' Taito LD Game Collection, ' released by Taito on December 14, 2023, includes HD remasters of three classic laser disc (LD) games that were mainstream in game centers around the 1980s. The games included are '

Time Gal ,' ' Space Battleship Yamato ,' and ' Ninja Hayate ,' which were released by Taito as LD games, and you can enjoy the atmosphere and animation of the old LD games.

When you purchase the 'Taito LD Game Collection,' three games are added to your Nintendo Switch.

First, let's play 'Time Gal'.

When I pressed the button, a menu appeared. I selected 'ARCADE.'

The opening movie plays. The villain, Ruda, steals a time machine and escapes.

Reika, the 'Time Gal' of the Historical Security Police, chases after Ruda as she travels through various eras.

You can see how the game is actually being played by watching the movie below.

Reika has landed in the ice age and is being chased by a mammoth. An arrow suddenly appears in the animation, so move the joystick in that direction.

I managed to avoid it. This is how the game progresses through the animation by repeating what is known as

QTE . If you watch the animation carefully, you can slightly predict when the QTE will appear, but since the time to input the joystick or buttons is quite short, it is quite difficult to progress without making any mistakes.

In addition to QTEs where you input joysticks or press buttons, Time Gal also has an event called 'Time Stop.' As shown in the image below, the animation stops for 10 seconds, during which you can choose from three options. Only one option is always correct, and if you choose the remaining two, you're out. There are almost no hints as to which option to choose, so it's quite difficult to proceed without making any mistakes. However, since the correct options are fixed, you can proceed by repeatedly retrying and memorizing them.

If you fail to enter the QTE, Reika will be defeated. If you fail, you will have to restart the stage, but Reika's reaction when you fail varies from scene to scene, so it's one of the highlights.

If you fail, the number in the 'GAL' box at the bottom right will decrease, and if you fail when it reaches 0, it's game over. However, although your score will decrease, you can still retry, so if you're patient, you can still progress through the animation.

When the game is over, enter your name and record your score.

When you clear a stage, you get 5000 bonus points and warp to the next era. There are 16 stages in total, 5 from 1000 to 70 million years ago, 5 from the beginning of the Christian era to the present (2000), and 6 from 2000 to 4000 years in the future. There is no saving or loading.

You can select individual stages you have cleared from the 'TRAINING' menu.

In addition, in 'MOVIE THEATER', you can watch the cleared stage without playing. In the image below, the trees floating in the river are glowing, and in normal play, you fail unless you input the joystick down toward the light, but in MOVIE THEATER, the animation moves forward without you having to input anything.

In addition, from 'CONFIGURATION' you can change the number of remaining lives, set the language, and adjust the difficulty level from 1 to 5. I tried changing it to the most difficult level, '5'.

You can see what happens if you increase the difficulty level and play 'Time Gal' by watching the movie below.

If you increase the difficulty level, the arrows will not appear during the QTE. In the image below, the vines on the tree above Reika are glowing yellow, so you need to input the stick up.

In the image below, the holster on Reika's waist is glowing, so you have to press the button to fire the ray gun. In this way, at high difficulty levels, the 'what to input' is not displayed, so it is almost impossible to proceed unless you memorize it.

Next, I'll play 'Space Battleship Yamato,' an arcade game originally released in 1985.

The menu contents are the same as 'Time Gal'. Select 'ARCADE' to start the game.

Below is a movie of 'Space Battleship Yamato' being played.

Yamato takes off with the familiar music.

Okita Juzo announces the plan.

A sudden QTE will appear, so press the stick down.

I failed to input the stick and Yamato crashed into a rocky area.

The ship suffered heavy damage.

However, although the remaining lives in the lower left were reduced, I was able to proceed without retrying or having a game over. In 'Space Battleship Yamato,' you can choose a warp target from 'Pluto Airspace,' 'Space Cavity,' 'Aquarius,' or 'Fortress Uruk,' and conquer each stage. Here, I selected Aquarius.

You will be attacked with missiles, so press the button to intercept them. In 'Space Battleship Yamato,' in addition to the QTE similar to 'Time Gal,' there are relatively many shooting-like elements.

If the game is over, Yamato will be destroyed.

In 'Space Battleship Yamato,' you can also play cleared stages individually in training, or just rewatch the animations.

Finally, let's play 'Ninja Hayate', which was released by Taito in 1984 as the first LD game. 'Ninja Hayate' also has five menus: 'ARCADE', 'TRAINING', 'MOVIE THEATER', 'MANUAL' and 'CONFIGURATION'. Select 'ARCADE' to start the game.

You can get a good idea of the game content of 'Ninja Hayate' by watching the movie below.

I tried playing the HD remastered version of 'Ninja Hayate', the first LD game released by Taito in 1984, on the Nintendo Switch - YouTube

Hayate infiltrates a castle held by an evil ninja army in order to rescue the kidnapped princess.

'ACTION' is displayed, so input the joystick in the direction of the arrow. Ninja Hayate requires up, down, left, right, and four diagonal directions, for a total of eight directions, as well as button input.

Use QTE to avoid the traps set in the castle.

In addition, powerful enemies await in the castle. Battles with enemies are also carried out using only QTE with the joystick and buttons.

If the input is incorrect, Hayate will turn to dust and disappear.

Ninja Hayate has a total of 18 scenes, of which 6 are randomly selected from 15, plus the final 3 are fixed, for a total of 9 stages to clear. Therefore, you can select the pattern in which the scenes are selected from 'CONFIGURATION' to play.

In addition, if you turn on the '3 Mistake Skip Function,' you will be able to move forward in the story if you fail at the same point three times. This can be set in 'CONFIGURATION' for situations where you are curious about what happens next in the animation but find it too difficult to proceed.

The regular version of the 'Taito LD Game Collection' is priced at 9,680 yen (tax included), and the special edition with various bonuses such as a goods store soundtrack is priced at 19,580 yen. In addition, 'Time Gal', 'Space Battleship Yamato', and 'Ninja Hayate' can be purchased as download versions only, and each costs 4,180 yen (tax included).
