I checked the battery life and fast charging of the interesting Google Pixel Watch 2 and the original Pixel Watch.



In

the previous review of the Google Pixel Watch 2, released by Google on October 12, 2023, which we actually purchased and used, we found that the accuracy of the Pixel Watch 2 has improved compared to the original Pixel Watch, and it can be used at a glance while exercising. We found that the number of items that can be checked has increased, and usability has steadily improved. Furthermore, we compared the battery life and quick charging, which is one of the most important points when using a smartwatch on a daily basis.

Below is a photo of the Pixel Watch 2 (left) and Pixel Watch (right) right after I went out wearing them in my previous review. The time was 14:21, and both models had a fully charged battery of 100%. From here, we will use the device for exactly the same amount of time under the same conditions, such as keeping the screen always on and setting the brightness of the panel to 2 out of 3 levels, and then compare how much battery power is being drained.



Next, this is what it looked like when I came back after walking for about an hour. During exercise, both models recorded activity and collected data such as step count and heart rate. At the end of walking, the remaining battery power of Pixel Watch 2 was 80%, and the remaining battery power of Pixel Watch was 88%.



And this is what it looked like when I took it off in the evening of the same day. After I returned from walking, I finished recording my activities, and then I wore it indoors with little standing or walking. The remaining battery power of Pixel Watch 2 was 43% and Pixel Watch was 64%.



I wore it for 4 hours and 21 minutes, during which time the Pixel Watch 2 drained 67% battery and the Pixel Watch 36%. Both models are unlikely to last up to the 24 hours specified in Google's

technical specifications , but what was particularly surprising was that the Pixel Watch 2 wore out faster.

The battery is 294mAh for Pixel Watch and 306mAh for Pixel Watch 2, and the capacity of Pixel Watch 2 is slightly larger. On the other hand, the CPU has doubled from the Pixel Watch's dual core to the Pixel Watch 2's quad core, and the number of sensors installed has also increased from 8 to 12 types, and this improvement in hardware performance has reduced power consumption. It is possible that this may have been accelerated. In fact, in our previous review, we confirmed that the Pixel Watch 2 has higher accuracy in sensing the up and down of stairs even when worn for a short time.

Also, while Pixel Watch has been updated repeatedly since its release on October 13, 2022, Pixel Watch 2 has just been released, so optimization of the OS etc. may be lacking compared to Pixel Watch. There is also. I hope this point will be improved in future software updates.

Next, let's try the new fast charging that Pixel Watch 2 supports. First, I wore both models until they ran out of battery power and shut down automatically. The time at this time is 15:30.



For charging, use Google's genuine 30W charger .



Plug the charger directly into a power source and charge your Pixel Watch 2 using the included USB Type-C fast charging cable.



To charge a Pixel Watch that does not support fast charging, use a 20W charger and connect it to the included USB Type-C magnetic charging cable to start charging your Pixel Watch.



After charging for about 5 minutes, the smart watch was able to power on.



From here, we will look at the battery charging speed using a smartphone linked to each smartwatch. First, about 6 minutes after charging started, the remaining capacity was 10% for Pixel Watch 2 (left) and 19% for Pixel Watch (right). This seems to be a result of the Pixel Watch turning off while it still has power, rather than charging the Pixel Watch quickly.



35 minutes after the start of charging, the Pixel Watch 2 was 69% and the Pixel Watch was 53%, which was a reversal.



At 16:15, 45 minutes after charging started, the remaining battery power of Pixel Watch 2 was 87% and Pixel Watch was 58%. Google claims that the Pixel Watch 2 can be charged to ``80% in about 43 minutes'' and the Pixel Watch can be charged to ``50% in about 45 minutes'', which is almost the theoretical value.



After that, Pixel Watch 2 reached almost 98% full charge about 1 hour after charging started. Perhaps the charging speed is adjusted to avoid overcharging, but after 98%, the charging speed drops dramatically, and it was confirmed that it reached 100% at 16:52, about an hour and a half later. was.



On the other hand, Pixel Watch reached 98% at 17:12, 1 hour and 42 minutes later, and 100% at 17:18.



In summary, while the Pixel Watch 2 wears out faster than the Pixel Watch, it supports quick charging, so it can be used immediately even when the battery is low. In addition, after this, we will conduct another test using both models and will update if we find out why the battery consumption of Pixel Watch 2 was faster.

In order to confirm why the battery was draining faster than expected, I wore Pixel Watch 2 (left) and Pixel Watch (right) again. I turned it on at 9:19am, and both models were fully charged. Also, I thought that the Fitbit app might be the cause, so this time I uninstalled Fitbit from the smartphone that is linked to the smartwatch. Other conditions were the same as last time.



Below are the results after spending about 4 hours indoors. The remaining battery power was 83% for Pixel Watch 2 and 80% for Pixel Watch.



From here, I'll go out and use the exercise tracking feature. After cycling for a few minutes, the Pixel Watch 2 noticed changes in my exercise level and automatically suggested I start recording my activity. However, since I actually ride a bicycle outdoors and not on a stationary bike, I manually started the activity 'Mountain Biking' on both models.



The following is what happened after I returned from riding my bike for about an hour. The remaining battery power was 67% for Pixel Watch 2 and 64% for Pixel Watch. There is a discrepancy in the numbers on the pedometer, but this may be because the Pixel Watch misdetected the shaking of the bicycle due to a bump as walking. In other words, the data collected by Pixel Watch 2 when riding around town was more accurate.



Then I spent some more time indoors and took off my smartwatch. The total usage time was 6 hours and 51 minutes, during which time the Pixel Watch 2 drained 38% of the battery and the Pixel Watch 42%.



Roughly 7 hours, Pixel Watch 2 consumes about 5.4% of power per hour, Pixel Watch consumes about 6% of power, and continuous use for 24 hours including activity recording is a little difficult. However, the results were different from last time, where the Pixel Watch 2's battery consumption was significantly faster than the original Pixel Watch. If you are using Pixel Watch and feel that the battery is decreasing rapidly, it may be a good idea to cancel the connection with the Fitbit app.
