I found the booth of the USA Rice Federation at the FABEX venue.
At the booth, Californian rice 'Calrose' was being promoted.
I was curious about what it tasted like, so I tried Calrose cooked in a rice cooker first. This type of rice has a firm texture and is eaten by chewing thoroughly to bring out the sweetness. Compared to plain rice like Thai rice or basmati rice, the taste was closer to Japanese rice, and I could eat it without any discomfort. Many people say they prefer Calrose to Japanese rice because it is less sticky than Japanese rice.
According to the staff, Calrose is sometimes used as an ingredient in sweets in America. For example, there were tarts made with calrose and nuts.
When I tried a tart with Calrose, I could feel the smooth texture of Calrose mixed with the crunchy texture of the nuts.
