Google's genuine foldable smartphone 'Google Pixel Fold' photo review, solid construction and considerable weight

The first foldable smartphone

`` Google Pixel Fold '' in Google's genuine smartphone brand `` Pixel '' will appear on Monday, July 31, 2023. I was able to touch the foldable display using ultra-thin glass with a protective plastic layer and the Pixel Fold equipped with Android 13 optimized for foldable smartphones prior to the release, so I decided to start with the Pixel 7 . I checked the appearance while comparing.

Pixel Fold's cosmetic box looks like this. There are two types of Pixel Fold body colors, 'Porcelain' and 'Obsidian', and this time we will review Obsidian.

When you open the lid, the Pixel Fold body wrapped in wrapping paper with 'G' appears.

When I took out the main unit, there was a note below that said 'Handling of folding screen'.

I removed the wrapping paper. The back of the Pixel Fold is matte black and feels smooth to the touch. In the center is the Google logo 'G' engraved.

The part of the camera module looks something like this, rising about 2.5 mm from the back panel. There are three types of cameras: 48-megapixel wide-angle, 19.8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle, and 10.8-megapixel telephoto. Also, since only this camera module part has a mirror finish, fingerprints are likely to stand out.

The size of Pixel Fold (left) is 139.7 mm × 79.5 mm. Pixel 7 (right) arranged for size comparison is 155.6 mm x 73.2 mm.

The front side with the external cover display looks like this. At the top of the Pixel Fold (left) is a 9.5-megapixel front-facing camera.

The bottom part looks like this. Pixel Fold (left) is foldable, so the thickness is 12.1 mm for two screens. It is about 1.4 times as thick as the 8.5mm thick Pixel 7 (right).

There is a speaker grill and an antenna line on the top of Pixel Fold.

When folded, the internal display fits snugly, with no gaps. The bottom is also mirror-finished, so fingerprints are a little noticeable.

The left side of the Pixel Fold is the spine of the book, and is the hinge for the foldable display.

The folding display's hinges are mirror-finished multi-phase alloy steel construction, and there are no visible buttons.

And the part that hits the door in the book is the right side.

The hinge of the display is quite solid and hard, and the sides are mirror-finished and have a smooth touch, so it takes a lot of force to open, and it seems unlikely that you can easily open it with one hand.

When you open the display completely, it looks like this. The screen opens at an almost 180-degree angle, but leaves a wrinkle in the center that marks the fold.

Below is a close-up of the folding hinge part from the inside. I didn't see any gaps between the soft display and the body.

An 8 megapixel inner camera on the top.

The open angle is retained because the hinge is firm and rigid. Therefore, you can also let the Pixel Fold itself stand on its own with it opened at an angle as shown in the image below.

The open internal display is an OLED display with a 7.6-inch aspect ratio of 6:5 and a resolution of 2208 x 1840 pixels. You can see that it is clearly wider than the Pixel 7 with a 6.3-inch aspect ratio of 9:20.

The actual weight of Pixel Fold is 282g. Pixel 7 was 196g, so Pixel Fold is about 1.5 times heavier. When I actually held it in my hand, it felt solid and quite heavy, and I got the impression that it might be a bit tiring to hold it.

The box contained a quick start guide, a 1m USB-C to USB-C cable, and a quick switch adapter that converts from USB-A to USB-C.

A pin for opening the SIM card slot was included on the back of the quick start guide.

Google Pixel Fold is accepting reservations at the time of article creation, and the price is 253,000 yen including tax.
