Boris Erdagsen, a photo media artist living in Berlin, submitted an image titled ' THE ELECTRICIAN ' to the 2023 SWPA Creative category. This image looks like a portrait of two women, but it was actually generated by AI.

This image is one of the works that make up the series titled '

PSEUDOMNESIA: Fake Memories ' that Mr. Erdagsen has been working on since 2022. 'PSEUDOMNESIA' is Latin for pseudo-memory, or false memory, and unlike mere inaccurate memory, Erdagsen said, it's like remembering an event that never happened as if it were a real event. With those words as the theme, he said that AI was used to generate images based on the image of ``fake memories of the past that did not exist and were not photographed''.

'THE ELECTRICIAN' was one of the finalists in the SWPA Creative Division, and was finally selected by the judges as the overall winner of the division.

When the award was announced, Mr. Erdagsen commented on the award and AI on his blog.

'I am very happy to win the Creative category. I have been taking pictures since 1989 and have been working as a photo media artist since 2000. After 20 years of photography, my artistic focus has moved to explore the creative possibilities of AI generators.”

“For me, working with image-generating AI is a co-creative work that I create as a director. It starts with refining text prompts, not just button presses, then develops complex workflows, develops various It's a mix of platforms and techniques to explore the complexity of this process. The more you create such a workflow and define the parameters, the more creative it becomes.'

'I call my images 'images'. They are synthetically created using 'photography' as a visual language, they are not 'photographs'. By doing so, we hope to accelerate the process of award organizers recognizing this difference and creating a separate competition for AI-generated images.'

Erdagsen's award was controversial, with human photographers bemoaning the fact that an image made without a camera and without light could win a higher prize than the actual photographer. It seems that.

On April 13, 2023, one month after posting the above impressions, Mr. Erdagsen said again, ``Thank you for choosing my image,'' and ``I know that it is an image generated by AI. I don't know how many people were or doubted it, but it's not convincing, right?AI images and photos shouldn't be competing for awards like this, they're different things, AI images aren't photos Therefore, I will not accept this award,' he wrote on his blog, indicating his intention to refuse the award.

As a result, prizes including prize money of $ 5000 (about 670,000 yen) and Sony camera equipment, and glory including worldwide advertisement by books and exhibitions were abandoned.

``I applied to see if there was a contest where I could submit AI images, but there wasn't one,'' Erdagsen said. It's a debate about what is considered and what is not considered a photograph. Is the framework of photography big enough to allow an AI image to be submitted or is that wrong.By refusing this award, I I want to accelerate this discussion. As a photographer for 30 years, even before the transition to AI, I understand the strengths and weaknesses of this debate and am happy to participate.' says.

The SWPA has not issued any official statement on this matter, and on the contrary has taken action to remove Mr. Erdagsen's image and name from the SWPA

website .
