Getting the right amount of sleep can extend your life

Human beings spend nearly one-third of their lives sleeping, and many people realize that the quality of sleep affects the quality of life. Frank Qian, a doctor working at

Beth Israel Medical Center in the United States, has announced research results that people who fit five ``beneficial sleep patterns'' have a lower risk of death and a longer life expectancy.

Qian et al.'s research team collected responses from 172,321 people who participated from 2013 to 2018 from the data of the National Health Interview Survey conducted annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Center for Health Statistics. extract. In addition, the analysis was performed using data from the National Mortality Statistics up to December 31, 2019, with subjects followed for a median of 4.3 years.

About two-thirds of the subjects who responded to the national health interview survey were white, 14.5% self-reported as Hispanic, 12.6% as black, and 5.5% as Asian. The data included questions about the subject's health and sleep patterns, and it was possible to examine the association between cause of death and sleep patterns in subjects who died during the follow-up period. Of the 8,681 subjects who died during follow-up, 2,610 (30%) died from cardiovascular disease, 2,052 (24%) from cancer, and 4,019 (46%) from other causes. that's right.

Based on the subject's responses, the research team evaluated the following ``five factors'' that lead to high-quality sleep.

1: 7 to 8 hours of sleep per day.
2: I have trouble falling asleep less than 2 days a week.
3: No more than 2 days a week when you wake up in the middle of the night without being able to stay asleep.
4: Not using sleeping pills.
5: I feel 'well rested' after waking up at least 5 days a week.

Each factor was assigned a 0 or 1 point, and the research team rated the subjects' sleep patterns on a 0-5 point scale. The research team analyzed the association between sleep patterns and mortality, taking into account risk factors such as socioeconomic status, smoking and alcohol consumption, and other medical conditions known to be associated with mortality.

Analysis showed that subjects with a score of '5' were 30% less likely to die from any cause than subjects with a sleep pattern score of '0-1'. Specifically, they were 21% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease, 19% less likely to die from cancer, and 40% less likely to die from other causes.

'If you fit all of these ideal sleep patterns, you're more likely to live longer,' Qian said. There was a clear dose-response relationship with a gradual decline, which I think emphasizes that getting enough sleep is not enough. , should not interfere with falling asleep or maintaining sleep.'

We also found that the life expectancy of subjects with a score of '5' was 4.7 years longer for men and 2.4 years longer for women when compared to subjects with a score of '0 to 1'. More research is needed to understand why men and women with the same sleep score have different life expectancies.

“Getting enough sleep from a young age and developing good sleep habits, such as sleeping without distractions and paying attention to sleep hygiene, can make a big difference to your long-term health,” said Qian. You can, 'he argued that people should talk more actively about sleep and evaluate it.
