A survey using Apple Watch reveals that most users do not get enough sleep every day

Sleep is an essential act to keep the mind and body healthy, and short sleep time may induce heart and other internal organ diseases. However, data collected by Apple's research team from more than 42,000 users reveals that it's hard to say that you're getting enough sleep as recommended by health care organizations. rice field.

Apple's health research team, Apple Heart and Movement Study, has been working to investigate heart and blood vessel diseases for some time, and has newly investigated sleep, which is deeply related to cardiovascular diseases.

The research team referred to sleep measurement data collected by Apple Watch for 4 months from February 1, 2022 to June 1, 2022, and among the subjects who participated in the survey at that time , calculated statistics for 42,455 people who shared sleep data for 10 nights or more. As a result, it was found that the average sleep time per person was 6 hours and 27 minutes.

The American Heart Association recommends 7 to 9 hours of healthy sleep, but we also know that only 31.2% of those surveyed meet this standard.

Because the environment in the United States varies greatly from state to state, researchers reviewed the statistics separately for each state. The states with the highest percentage of people getting an average of 7 hours or more of sleep a night are mostly in the north, with the highest rates in Washington, South Dakota and Idaho, followed by Hawaii, Mississippi and West Virginia. It turns out that the state is the lowest.

The researchers speculated that 'differences in sleep patterns between states may be related to latitude, cultural differences, demographic differences such as age, employment status, occupation, and many other factors.' I'm here. However, although there are differences at the state level, it is also known that less than 40% of residents met the recommended sleep hours in all states.

In this study, in addition to looking at total sleep time, we also investigated how sleep changes, such as changes in sleep time per night and sleep/wake time.

When the researchers looked at the difference in sleep onset times on weekends and weekdays, they found that 66.4% of people went to bed before midnight on weekdays, but that decreased to 56.6% on weekends. As you might imagine, people tend to stay up late on the weekends.

Irregular sleep onset times are associated with increased susceptibility to certain diseases. The figure below shows representative figures for regular people (blue) and irregular people (orange) for sleep onset times for 29 days.

In the figure below, figures for total sleep time are shown as well. A study conducted by Harvard University on elderly people found that those with more variable sleep patterns had higher BMI, shorter overall sleep duration, higher heart rate during sleep, and more likely to experience depressive symptoms. People with irregular sleep may want to review their sleeping habits.

Researchers have shown that ``many people tend to overestimate their sleep duration. If you haven't set up sleep on your Apple Watch yet and are interested in seeing your sleep metrics, check out our instructions on setting up and viewing your sleep data.' rice field.
