In an email to employees, Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft's chief people officer, said, 'The way, when, and where we work has changed dramatically. 'Modernizing to a more flexible model is a natural next step,' he said, announcing that the new leave policy would take effect from January 16.

According to The Verge, an IT news site that obtained Mr. Hogan's email, Microsoft calls its unlimited vacation system ``Discretionary Time Off'' (DTO). This will allow Microsoft employees, including new employees, to take time off without having to wait for the results of their leave requests.

Apart from the DTO, employees are also provided with 10 types of time off, including company holidays, leave from work, sick leave, days to attend a trial as a juror, and bereavement leave. Additionally, those with unused vacation time will be paid compensation for the unused vacation time in April.

However, only full-time employees in the United States are eligible for DTO. This is because American labor laws make it difficult to provide hourly workers with unlimited vacation time, and other countries have different vacation laws. In addition, Microsoft's site states that the total number of employees in the United States is approximately 122,000 people.

This type of work system has been introduced by companies such as Netflix and Goldman Sachs Group, but it has been pointed out that if bosses impose quotas that prevent them from taking any days off, the system becomes a mere skeleton. . A Microsoft spokesperson said the company expects employees to be able to take sufficient time off after taking these system issues into account.

Prior to this decision, Microsoft allowed permanent work from home in October 2020 when the pandemic was intensifying, and also gave a pandemic bonus of $1,500 (approximately 160,000 yen at the then rate) in July 2021. We are providing. In addition, companies other than Microsoft, such as Salesforce, Oracle, and LinkedIn, which is owned by Microsoft, have established unlimited vacation policies.
