How to forcibly upgrade the memory capacity of NVIDIA Grabo

Image generation AI such as

Stable-Diffusion and new PC games require graphics board specifications, so lack of memory capacity is a problem for many GPU users. A video has been published on YouTube that solves such a problem with brute force.

Upgrading VRAM on an nVidia GeForce GT640 GPU-YouTube

The reason YouTuber dosdude1 decided to upgrade the GPU memory was that when he tried to run Mac ROM on Xserve , his graphics board didn't have enough specs. It requires 2GB of memory to boot, but the GeForce GT640 I managed to procure had only 1GB.

If you check using the free software '

CPU-Z ', the memory capacity is certainly displayed as 1GB.

Mr. dosdude1, who started remodeling immediately, first removed the heat sink and bracket.

This black chip attached to the board is the memory chip. Eight chips of 1 Gbit each make a total of 1 GB.

And this is the chip to be replaced, the capacity is doubled to 2Gbit.

dosdude1 then dipped the chip in soldering

flux and heated it with a preheater .

This is what it looks like while warming up.

I will remove the chip while applying flux to the chip of the graphic board and heating it.

Mr. dosdude1 who solders there.

Put a new tip on it.

Use a light to carefully check for any misalignment.

Heat again.

Wipe off the flux on the board and you're done.

I will actually install the graphic board and test it.

I was able to increase the memory to 2GB.

I also succeeded in booting the Mac ROM, which was the purpose.
