Originally, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and executive David Marcus aimed to roll out their own stablecoin 'Libra' and digital wallet 'Calibra'.
However, without regulatory approval, the project continued with the name changed from 'Libra' to 'Diem' and 'Calibra' to 'Novi', but the future was still uncertain. Therefore, 'Novi' gave up support for 'Diem' and was released using Pax Dollar.
Initially, 'Novi' was planned to be a general term for Meta's financial brands including Facebook Pay, but when Marcus left Meta in 2021, it became easier to handle, and in June 2022, Facebook Pay became Meta Pay. Renamed. In rebranding the financial brand, Meta paid 60 million dollars (about 8 billion yen) to a company called 'MetaBank' to acquire the trademark right, and the former MetaBank changed its name to 'Pathward'.
In addition, Mr. Marcus who left Meta is working on the development of payment technology 'Lightning' that operates on the Bitcoin blockchain at a startup called 'Lightspark'.
