NVIDIA announces high-performance AI computing & sensor technology platform 'Isaac Nova Orin' to accelerate the development of autonomous mobile robots

NVIDIA announced the platform ' Isaac Nova Orin ' to accelerate the development of

autonomous mobile robots (AMRs: Autonomous Mobile Robots) that detect steps and irregularities and move autonomously to the destination while autonomously traveling back and forth and left and right.

AMRs are robots that are mainly active in the logistics industry, and the rumba-style robots that are active in Amazon's warehouse can be said to be the representative. If you are wondering what kind of robots AMRs are installed in Amazon's warehouse, please check the following articles.

In some cases, warehouses that use AMRs boast a site area of 90,000 square meters or more, and by increasing or decreasing the number of ARMs according to the warehouse area, it is also possible to flexibly meet the demand on the warehouse side. One of. However, when it comes to using AMRs in hospitals, retailers, airports, manufacturers, etc., the presence of constantly moving workers is a major obstacle.

To accelerate the development of such AMRs, NVIDIA announced 'Isaac Nova Orin', a state-of-the-art computing and sensor reference platform. Isaac Nova Orin is built on Jetson AGX Orin , which can provide server-class AI performance, combining high-performance AI computing capabilities with state-of-the-art center technology.

The Isaac Nova Orin contains all the computing and sensor hardware needed to design, build and test autonomous driving of AMRs, at the core of which are the two Jetson AGX Orin units. Two Jetson AGX Orin enable AI computing up to 550 TOPS. These modules can also process data from a sensor unit consisting of 6 cameras, 3 LiDARs and 8 ultrasonic sensors in real time.

Isaac Nova Orin includes not only these AI computing hardware, but also hardware acceleration packages like NVIDIA Isaac ROS GEMs and support for the new simulation app NVIDIA Isaac Sim . NVIDIA emphasizes that by leveraging these, AMRs have a solution to better recognize their surroundings, safely avoid obstacles, and calculate efficient routes.

It is obvious from the following movie how easy it is to build a virtual environment for AMRs and autonomous driving test by actually using NVIDIA Isaac Sim and NVIDIA Isaac ROS.

This is a virtual environment built with NVIDIA Isaac Sim. 'Isa ac Carter' is written as AMRs that autonomously run in a virtual environment.

A virtual environment for training autonomous driving of AMRs can be randomly constructed.

The components are warehouses, shelves, wooden boxes, cardboard boxes, pallets, forklifts, etc. You can freely place shelves and obstacles (pallets, cardboard boxes, forklifts, etc.).

AMRs traveling in a virtual environment use NVIDIA's visual algorithm

SLAM to detect surrounding objects.

From there, the surrounding environment is reproduced with a 3D mesh ...

Recognize 'Distant obstacle', 'Near obstacle', and 'Potential collision' in the surrounding environment, and remove the parts that do not correspond to these. By driving like this, it simulates driving while avoiding obstacles in a virtual space.

NVIDIA Isaac Sim will be released in April 2022.
