Improve your child's reading comprehension just by playing an action game for 12 hours

In modern society, poor reading comprehension is more likely to cause some difficulties. Especially for children who live in school, the hardships are immeasurable. In order to improve this, the University of Geneva team created an action game with functions to improve reading comprehension, and when children played it, the effect appeared in just 12 hours and the reading comprehension improved. ... apparently ...

Attention control is considered a promising way to improve reading comprehension.

Previous studies have shown that action games improve skills such as visual, attention development, work memory, and cognitive flexibility, so the Geneva University team worked with Trent University in Italy to work with them. We have created a video game 'Skies of Manawak' that combines mini-games to train functions necessary for reading, such as work memory, impulse suppression, and cognitive flexibility.

In the world of the game, players will complete various missions to save the planet and advance the game with the flying creature 'Rakı'. Although it is an action game, violent elements have been eliminated to make it suitable for young children.

The survey included 150 Italian children aged 8 to 12 years, one group playing this game and the other playing the programming education game 'Scratch'. The two games have in common that control of attention is required, but the action game created by the research team remembers the sequence of symbols and reacts only when Raku makes a specific voice. Whereas you are asked to do the work within the time limit, 'Scratch' needs to understand the objects and logical structures in order to establish the programming order.

The children first took a word, non-existent word, paragraph reading ability measurement test and attention test, and then played games assigned to them for two hours and six weeks a week under the supervision of the school. After the training period, I took the test again.

As a result, the children who played the action game had a 7-fold improvement in their ability to control their attention compared to the control group. Furthermore, in the reading comprehension test, it was found that not only the reading speed but also the accuracy was improved. This tendency for improvement was not seen in the control group. The improvement in reading comprehension occurred even when no reading ability was required in action games.

Three evaluation tests were conducted 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months after the training. In all cases, the children who played the action game performed better than the control group, and their reading comprehension was maintained. I also understand. On the contrary, his Italian grades improved significantly over time.

The game has also been translated into German, French and English, but researcher Eileen Altarelli said, 'Italian is a very clear language in which each letter is pronounced, but French and English are there. Ambiguous and very different learning tasks. Reading an ambiguous language requires the ability to learn how exceptions and different contexts affect pronunciation and increase reliance on memorization. '

In addition, 'Skies of Manawak' has an explanation page on the official website of Studio Bliquo that I made, but the demo version has already been deleted and I could not download it.
