Western Digital is known for its HDD business, and at the same time, it has become one of the largest storage companies in the world by acquiring SanDisk in 2015 and starting the flash memory business.
Although SanDisk's business areas overlapped with Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory), which Western Digital is affiliated with, the two companies have continued to work hand in hand.
The merger story could be finalized in September 2021 if all goes well, and the merged company is expected to be headed by Western Digital CEO David Goeckeler. On the other hand, there is still the possibility of a breach, in which case Kioxia will aim for an initial public offering (IPO) on its own.
No official comments have been announced by Western Digital or Kioxia on this matter.
