Why did a mysterious fire that looks like the sea is burning?
On July 2, 2021 local time, a mysterious fire broke out in the Gulf of Mexico that looked as if the sea was burning. Oil companies have reported that a gas leak in an undersea pipeline was the cause of the fire, also known as the 'eyes of fire.'

The fire broke out off the coast of Campeche , a city facing the Gulf of Mexico, about 150 meters away from the platform of the Ku-Maloob-Sap oil field owned by Pemex , a state-owned oil company in Mexico. The Ma Klob Sap field is said to be one of the most profitable oil fields owned by Pemex, out of 1.7 million barrels of oil per day (about 270 million liters) produced by Pemex as a whole. Reuters points out that it produces more than 40%.
Environmental protection activist Greta Thunberg and US Senator Bernie Sanders responded to the fire, also known as the 'flame eye' on social media, to revive fossil fuel dependence and the oil industry. I'm blaming you.
Meanwhile the people in power call themselves 'climate leaders' as they open up new oilfields, pipelines and coal power plants --granting new oil licenses exploring future oil drilling sites.

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Pemex executives explain that the fire was not caused by an oil spill, but by a gas leak in the submarine pipelines that make up the oil platform. According to a statement by Pemex, bad weather caused a problem in the gas fuel compressor of the pipeline, causing a gas leak and igniting the gas that had risen to the surface of the sea, causing a fire.
The fire broke out around 5:15 local time on July 2nd. In addition to extinguishing the fire at sea, the valve connecting the pipeline was closed to stop the gas leak, and at the same time, nitrogen was injected to suppress the flame, and about 5 hours passed the fire. It was erased around 30:30. Pemex said that no one was injured in the fire and that it did not affect the production plan.
Pemex claims that there was no oil spill from the fire and that the swift response avoided environmental damage, and said in a statement that it would identify the root cause of the gas leak in the future. Meanwhile, Gusatvo Alanis, director of the Center for Environmental Law in Mexico (CEMDA), told Reuters that it was too early to determine that the fire had no impact on the environment. In addition, a coalition of citizen groups such as CEMDA and Greenpeace released a statement on July 5 calling for a ban on oil mining and oil field expansion from the deep sea, a detailed investigation of the impact of fires on the environment, and environmental restoration. ..
