Dredging work has begun to expand the south entrance on the Suez Canal , an artificial sea surface channel that connects the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Indian Ocean via the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The south entrance to the Suez Canal is where Ever Given, a container ship owned by a Japanese ship lending company, ran aground.

On March 23, 2021, the container ship 'Ever Given' owned by Japanese ship lending company Shoei Kisen and operated by Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine was opened at the south entrance of the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal Authority , which operates the Suez Canal, has released a movie announcing the expansion of the estuary using two dredgers. The dredging work will extend the width of the south entrance of the Suez Canal by about 40km.

According to Osama Rabbie, Secretary of the Suez Canal Authority, the expansion work will be carried out in parallel passage sections from the north entrance to 132-162 km and passage sections from 122 to 132 km. In addition, the depth of the canal will be expanded from 127 meters to 172 meters due to the expansion of the passage. Ever Given ran aground 151km from the north entrance of the Suez Canal, so it is within the scope of expansion work.
