Studies show that new corona survivors have a 60% increased risk of death within 6 months

Coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is a disease with a known 'mortality rate of approximately 2%'. However, a new study of more than 87,000 subjects found that even COVID-19 survivors had an approximately 60% increased risk of death within 6 months.

A study by Professor Ziyad Al-Aly and colleagues at Washington University in St. Louis' Clinical Epidemiology Center calculated 'how much COVID-19 increases the risk of death' from diagnostic records kept at the Veterans Health Administration. .. Professor Al-Aly said that 73,435 subjects (mean age 61 years) who were confirmed to have COVID-19 infection but were not hospitalized, and about subjects who were not confirmed to have COVID-19 infection and were not hospitalized. Compare 5 million people (average age 69 years). We defined 'those who were alive 30 days after confirmation of infection' as survivors and investigated the change in mortality risk due to COVID-19.

As a result, it was found that COVID-19-infected persons die '8.39 more per 1000 people' in the span of 6 months after infection. Despite targeting mildly ill individuals who did not require hospitalization, COVID-19-infected individuals were found to have an increased risk of death by approximately 60%.

Similar to previous studies , these COVID-19-infected individuals have been found to have an increased proportion of those with the following persistent health problems:

Respiratory system: persistent cough, shortness of breath, decreased blood oxygen levels.
・ Nervous system: Stroke, headache, memory disorder, dysgeusia, olfactory disorder.
-Mental health: anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, substance abuse.
・ Metabolic system: New onset of diabetes, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, etc.
-Cardiovascular system: acute coronary disease, heart failure, palpitation, arrhythmia.
-Gastrointestinal system: constipation, diarrhea, gastric acid reflux disease.
-Kidney: Acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease.
・ Coagulation regulation: Blood clots in the legs and lungs.
・ Skin: Rash, hair loss.
・ Musculoskeletal system: Joint pain, muscle weakness.

Professor Al-Aly and colleagues are also conducting a survey comparing inpatients with influenza with those with COVID-19. The results of this study show that the risk of death for COVID-19 survivors is '50% higher' than for influenza.

Although COVID-19 is a respiratory disease, Professor Al-Aly suggested that it may affect almost all organs in the body. There is a possibility. '
