'Youtube-dl' is a program that downloads videos uploaded to YouTube, bilibili, Vimeo, Nico Nico Douga, etc. and SoundCloud music files, and the code has been released on GitHub. However, the code was removed after the RIAA requested removal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) for circumventing technical copyright protection measures.

GitHub CEO Nat Friedman also responded to these moves. He appeared in an IRC chat where developers gathered and stated that he wanted to restore the youtube-dl repository as soon as possible.

At first, Mr. Friedman was suspected of being someone who claims to be the CEO, but he proved himself using his Twitter account. The developers also acknowledged that it was genuine and consulted on what to do.

The problematic youtube-dl is still deleted from the original repository, but volunteers who oppose the RIAA's movement have created a large number of mirrors on GitHub.

Some people share youtube-dl as an 'image'.

News site TorrentFreak points out that the RIAA's move has created a ' Streisand effect ' where pressure can spread the problem even more.
