A movie that disassembles 'Oura Ring 2' that the NBA paid to players for the new corona countermeasures

The NBA 2019/2020 season, which was suspended from March 11, 2020 due to the new coronavirus, will

resume from July 30 . Along with this, it has been announced that athletes will be provided with a ring-shaped activity tracker, ' oura ring ', as a measure against new coronavirus infections. IFixit immediately disassembles such Oura Ring 2 which is the latest model of Oura Ring .

Jeff, who works as a lead disassembly engineer at iFixit, wears Oura Ring 2 in the middle finger of his right hand.

It is a ring-type activity tracker that has become a hot topic that the NBA has distributed to players.

It is a wearable device that not only can monitor multiple vital signs of the wearer, but can also check sleep patterns.

Jeff said, 'We have disassembled various devices for many years, but I want to see how they function purely as a technology fan.'

We have taken an X-ray of Oura Ring 2 to confirm the internal structure.

First, fix Oura Ring 2 in a vise.

Tighten so that the shape of the ring is deformed……

Heat with a heat gun. Jeff argues that this should deform the substrate and polymer coating inside the Oura Ring 2 and make it easier to remove from the housing.

However, it does not work.

So, next, use a knife to directly cut the inner circuit board. The circuit board is said to be coated with a medical grade plastic material.

After making the notch, use a kind of needle to increase the notch in the board.

Then prepare alcohol...

Introducing Oura Ring 2.

When you take it out, the board part is about to come off from the case, so remove the board forcibly.

It looks like this when the board part is removed.

If you remove the ribbon cable etc...

I found the battery label on the board. 3.7V 21mAh 0.0777Wh very small battery made by Chinese manufacturer.

Heat the circular circuit board with a heat gun to soften it...

Processed flat.

There are three types of sensors on the circuit board facing the finger side. The red circle has an LED sensor with an infrared receiver, the orange circle has a pulse oximeter, and the yellow frame has an accelerometer, gyroscope, and temperature sensor.

This is the back side of the circuit board. There is a dual core microcontroller with power supply compatible with

Bluetooth Low Energy in the red frame part, and a battery management chip made by Texas Instruments in the orange frame part.

Although it can not be disassembled into smaller pieces, you can find an induction charging coil for charging in the battery part by checking it with an X-ray photograph.

Oura Ring 2 supports wireless charging, and the X-ray photograph of the charging dock looks like this.

Oura Ring 2 is a 'disposable smart ring' that is difficult to disassemble and cannot be repaired, Jeff says.
