Right now, there are deeply carved pains in the hearts of many and in the souls of our country. To stand up together, we must understand the fear, pain, and anger caused by the murderous case of Mr. George Floyd and the long history of racism, and take action for others. I won't.
The painful past continues today. Not only in violence, but in the daily experience deeply rooted in discrimination. We are witnessing discrimination in the criminal justice system, high mortality from illness in black and Hispanic communities, support from neighbors, and education available to children.
While our law has changed, the reality is that the protection it gives is not universally applied. The United States has made progress, but the fact is that a community of people of color has endured discrimination and trauma.
I've heard from many people about the fears they feel in the community. Most of the fear is in the community, in daily life, and, cruelly, in the color of your skin. Our society will not be blessed unless we can guarantee that those who give love, labor, and life to America will be free from fear.
Apple's mission is to create technology that gives people the power to change the world better, and ever. We have always been a force of diversity and have built a brand that welcomes people of all ages around the world into the Apple Store and welcomes everyone.
But Apple has to do more. We are committed to continuing our efforts to bring significant resources and technology to under-served school systems. We are committed to continuing to fight the environmental inequalities that have a greater impact on black communities and people of color. We look forward to the diversity and inclusion of our company so you can hear all the great ideas. We will also donate to groups such as the Equal Justice Initiative, which tackles issues such as racism.
To make a difference, we must reassess our own views and actions in the light of the deep pains that are often ignored. Staying on the sidelines does not solve the problem of human dignity. Black communities, we are looking at you. Your own existence and your life are important.
I think many people now want to 'return to their normal lives' and think that 'the moment I can turn my eyes away from discrimination, my mind rests.' It may be difficult to acknowledge, but the hope is a proof of privilege. The death of George Floyd is shocking and tragic evidence that we must aim for a better future than the 'normal' future and create an ideal future of equality and justice.
In the words of Pastor Martin Luther King , 'In every society, there are people who want to maintain the status quo and people who are indifferent to the situation even during the revolution. Our lives today are the ability to remain aware. And the ability to adapt to new ideas, stay alert, and keep working on change.''
We must promise to create a world that changes with each breath and is better and fairer for all.
