According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), members of Palestinian extremist group Hamas contacted Israeli soldiers online on Facebook, Instagram and Telegram, posing as teenage girls, and spoofing chat apps. It has been reported that soldiers are being urged to install.
When this spyware is installed, it will be possible to take photos remotely, access SMS messages and address books, files in smartphones, and share the GPS location of smartphones.
In response to a series of honey traps, IDF announced that it had 'halted the infrastructure used by Hamas to control infected devices.' Brigadier General Hedi Silberman, an IDF spokesman, said military intelligence had identified six social media accounts already in use by Hamas.
It is not the first time that Hamas has set up a honey trap on Israeli soldiers, and in 2017 a case where spyware is installed on Israeli soldiers' smartphones in a similar way is reported in 2017. IDF conducted a military raid on a building in the Gaza Strip in May 2019, where hackers belonging to Hamas were hiding, but it has not been disclosed whether the military raid had been resolved this time as well.
