On September 3, 2019 in local time, Apple has acquired three patents for the Apple Watch band. The first patent relates to the next-generation biometric sensor dedicated to Apple Watch, the second is an indicator that displays the user's health status with icons, etc., and the third is a dynamic to create a perfect fit It seems to be a system that can change the length of the band.

◆ Next generation biometric sensor for Apple Watch
The first patent is to install a biometric sensor on the Apple Watch band. The following image is a drawing of a patent acquired by Apple, and it appears that a biometric sensor is mounted on the yellow part of the illustration. The sensor for biometric authentication is equipped with an infrared thermal image sensor, and “FIG.8” in the lower right of the image is an image of the skin of the wearer photographed by the sensor.

This is a patent filed by Apple in January 2019 that Apple's Touch ID engineer invented a new biometric for Apple Watch that recognizes skin texture. In other words, the biometric sensor installed in the band will be used for the next generation Touch ID.

◆ Health condition indicator
The second patent is a backlit indicator to indicate ongoing activity. The indicator on the band will show the progress of the “Activity” app, heart rate, workout in progress, etc.

The yellow part of “FIG.2A” in the middle left of the image below shows the indicator screen, and the heart rate, the progress status of the activity app, and the workout in progress are displayed here. “FIG.5A”, “FIG.5B”, and “FIG.5C” at the bottom of the image are examples of indicator display.

This patent was filed in March 2017.

◆ System that can change the length of the band dynamically
Apple has also obtained a patent for a dynamically adjustable band that can be used to relax when you want to relax, and fit tightly around your arm when exercising.

The band tightly wraps around the wrist when measuring heart rate, etc., and it seems that the fit can be automatically restored so that the wrist is not too tight and the blood circulation is not hindered. In the image below, 'FIG.4A' shows the longest band length, and 'FIG.4B' shows the shortest band length.

This patent was filed in September 2016.
