" MIDI ", an international standard for digital transfer of musical performance data of electronic musical instruments, is standardized and disseminated by the Musical Instruments Electronics Association of Japan (AMEI) and the MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) of the United States-based international organization It is done. It was announced that a new version upgrade will take place after over 30 years since the announcement of such MIDI protocol.

MIDI standardization began in the early 1980s and the protocol was announced in 1983, the world's largest musical instrument show " NAMM Show " in the United States. The birth of MIDI greatly changed the world of music production and opened up possibilities for new music production tools such as music sequencer and software synthesizer.

After that, it became an international standard through the 1980s, but the version itself of the standard itself was not upgraded for a long time. However, in January 2019 AMEI and MMA announced that they decided the core function and name of MIDI's next generation protocol " MIDI 2.0 ".

Companies participating in the project are "Ableton / Cycling '74", "Art + Logic", "Bome Software", "Google", "imitone", "Native Instruments", "Roland", "ROLI", "Steinberg", "ouchKeys", "Yamaha", etc. , Musical instrument manufacturers and software companies in and outside Japan. At the time of article creation, participating companies are in the process of developing prototypes, and it is said that NAMM Show in 2019 is conducting events to verify compatibility and connectivity that only member companies can participate in about.

AMEI and MMA have closely shared code sharing concerning prototype development and are promoting the rationalization of development. At the prototype stage, only members of AMEI and MMA can use MIDI 2.0, and there seems to be possibility that the specification will be strengthened further in the prototyping process.

MIDI 2.0 gives priority to backward compatibility, updates such as integration with new composing software and the Web, expansion of resolution, improvement of expressive power, tightening of time control will be done. MIDI 2.0 says it will pave the way for a new generation of MIDI devices while maintaining compatibility with existing Million MIDI 1.0 devices.
