Chrome and Firefox plan to terminate FTP support

FTP is a protocol for sending and receiving files between the server and client, using two kinds of software. It is reported that Chrome and Firefox are planning to close support for such FTP.

Chrome and Firefox Developers Aim to Remove Support for FTP

Chrome developers wanted to end FTP support at Chrome for several years. FTP is a fairly old protocol, and there are still problems in terms of security. For that reason, developers are said to have been considered "to end FTP support at Chrome and migrate to the application" around 2014.

In recent years, opportunities to use FTP on the browser are reduced, and most users never use FTP. A small number of users continue to use FTP stably, but Chrome said that they decided to end support for FTP.

Previously, when opening a file on the FTP server on Chrome, the file was rendered and displayed on the browser. However, developers plan to abolish support for displaying files on FTP server on Chrome. Instead of opening the file in the browser, downloading it to the device will change it, and we will continue to reduce FTP support gradually.

Also, not only Chrome but Firefox shows a policy to terminate FTP support. The developer says in the forum that "Firefox is planning to completely eliminate FTP, and should not add any new code on FTP any more".
