What is the only person alone in the history of human beings buried on the moon?

In the official record, the name is left as 12 astronauts who participated in the Apollo program that was held from the 1960s to the beginning of the 1970s as "human beings who have walked on the moon". However, there is only one human being who is buried in the moon and sleeps in history.

Eugene Shoemaker Is Still the Only Man Buried on the Moon - Atlas Obscura

Dr. Eugene Shoemaker is an American astronomer who taught at the California Institute of Technology and discovered many asteroids and comets (Saisei). The most famous thing of the celestial bodies discovered by Dr. Shoemaker is ' Shoe Maker · Levy No. 9 Comet ' which collided with Jupiter in 1994.

Dr. Shoemaker was not only astronomy but also a researcher of planetary geology . In particular, in the early 1960s Dr. Shoemaker, specializing in the investigation of craters, established the Astrogeology Research Program at the US Geological Survey . In the Apollo project being promoted at the time, Dr. Shoemaker supervised the training of the lunar mission. In addition, Dr. Shoemaker is tracking that the huge crater on the earth is a collision mark of the meteorite, such as Nerutringer · Lease in Germany and Beringer · Crater in Arizona.

However, on July 18, 1997, Dr. Shoemaker was investigating the Australian crater, unfortunately suffering from a traffic accident and losing his life.

About three months ago when Dr. Shoemaker passed away, Pegasus of the aerial launch rocket on the Canary Islands successfully launched. At this time, what was stored in the rocket was the remains of 24 people. Among them were those of Mr. Jean Rottenberry who was a producer of "Star Trek". I planned the first 'space funeral' in this human history , Charles Shaffer, CEO of a private company "Celestis" dealing with space funerals.

Mr. Caroine · Polco, who was good with both the shoe maker and the public and private, obtained the ashes of Dr. Shoemaker in order to make the dream of the shoe maker, "I want to walk the moon one day as an astronaut one day", to come. Then, Mr. Polco negotiated to NASA, "How can I manage the ashes of the doctor somehow and deliver it to the moon," NASA who liked this idea seems to have told Celestis. Mr. Shafer had an interest in Mr. Porco's idea of "burial on the moon" for the first time in history, demanding only a capsule cost of $ 600 (about 67,000 yen) to contain the ashes, He said that he launched a "moon bombardment project" to send the ash of Dr. Shoemaker to the moon using NASA's lunar exploration plan.

On 7th January 1998, Dr. Shoemaker's ashes were launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida, along with the lunar explorer " Luna Prospector ".

Luna Prospector conducted a lunar surface observation over about a year and a half, and on July 31, 1999, in order to carry out the mission "to confirm the presence of ice in the moon", the crater in the Moon's South Pole I conflicted. The capsule containing the ash of the shoe maker's crash collided with the lunar prospector on the moon and the first "moon bombing" of humanity succeeded. The following image was engraved on a brass foil (glue foil) that was affixed to a capsule filled with ashes, and is a memorial of the scientific heritage of Dr. Shoemaker.

As of October 2018 Celestis is the only company that has achieved a lunar funeral. In recent years, Blue Origin established by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos aims to construct a lunar landing base by 2023 , human beings are entering the moon since the Apollo project. For the space industry that is showing excitement again, Mr. Sheffler announces comments that welcome the entry of other companies in the same industry, "There must be competition in order for the market to be maintained." Atlas Obscura says "Dr. shoe maker sleeping on the moon may not be alone in the near future."
