Nikon's Small World, a contest that captures the beautiful world of microscopes with a camera, was announced in 2018



Nikon's Small World 'top works of 2018 were announced for photographs and movie contests photographed in a fantastic and beautiful microscopic world that can be caught only by high-performance cameras. Both are very beautiful work and it has become a work enthralling whether the beautiful sight is spreading in the microscopic world which can not be seen with the naked eye of human beings.

◆ Photograph division No. 1: eyes of weevils
The first prize in 2018 was the weevil eye taken by Yousef Al Habshi of the United Arab Emirates. On the upper part we can see that the complex eyes of the weevils are closely aligned and their surroundings are structured like green scales. The magnification of the lens is 20 times.



◆ Photograph division second place: sporangia of ferns
The 2nd place was taken by Panama photographer Rogelio Moreno Gill, who photographed the sporangium filled with spores released by fern plants to increase individuals. The magnification of the camera is 10 times, the unusual color is due to autofluorescence rather than artificial fluorescent markers.



◆ 3rd place in the photography division: larvae of Awafu beetle confined in foam
The photograph that Saulius Gugis captured in the state of Illinois in the United States using multifocus synthesis, the insect of the eagleworm, Awafukimushi, is locked in the bubble became the third place. The larva of aphilus beetle bubbles excrement, eventually becomes a whisky high-viscosity mass, and lives with its bubble mass as a nest. The magnification of the camera is 5 times.

◆ Photograph division 5th: Embryo of the bluefin tuna <br> The photograph taken by Tessa Montague of Harvard University, which colored the embryo of the bluefin tuna which is a kind of spiders commonly found in human homes, won fifth place. The surface is pink, the cell nucleus is blue, the microtubule which is a tubular structure found in the cell is colored green and photographed at magnification of 20 times.



◆ Photographic division 6th: Retina fovea - Fluorescent photograph taken by Hanen Khabou, who serves as a visual research institute in Paris, France, was taken at 6th place photographing the fovea of the retina. The fovea is a part contributing to the vision of a high-definition central visual field. The magnification is 40 times.



◆ Photo division 7th: human tears
The drop of human tears taken by Norm Barker of Johns Hopkins University ranked in 7th place. The tears taken under the dark field seems to be completely different from the tears we usually see.



◆ Photograph division 8th: Portrait of mango weevils - A work of Pia Scanlon of Australia, who took the portrait of the mango weevil , parasitic on mango , won eighth place. There are two compound eyes in the center part of a face somewhat, it is clearly visible that the skin is covered with a structure like a scales.



◆ Photo division 9th: anti-counterfeit seal
The first artifacts ranked in ninth place so far. A hologram sticker for anti-counterfeit, taken by Mr. Haris Antonopoulos in Greece at a magnification of 10 times, formed an elaborate and regular pattern unique to artifacts.



◆ Photograph division 10th: Flower pattern with pollen <br> Flower pattern with flowers and fruits Part of the stem to support flowers and fruit The work of Csaba Pintér of Hungary, photographing the plenty of pollen in " flower pattern " Earned 10th place. The movie division that won the 1st rank in the 2018 movie was filmed by Elizabeth M. Haynes and Jiaye Henry He of the University of Wisconsin Madison , who showed how the nervous system grew in zebrafish embryos. The movie is taken at 10 times magnification, and the appearance of nerve tissue like the mesh eye grows makes me feel the mystery of life.

◆ Movie division second place: appearance of laser light on soap film <br> 2nd place is a film of soap film of laser light taken by Israeli researchers Miguel A. Bandres and Anatoly Patsyk The movie that was devoted to ranked in. ◆ Movie division fourth place: the moment the baby of Daphnia is born Moments of the moment the baby born from a parent is born by parents Wim van Egmond of the Netherlands is 4th place.
