During the Second World War, many of the pilots of the US Navy were weakened by the pressure and stress received from combat. As a result, many cases such as "shoot down the friendly machines erroneously" and "being shot down in a circumventable circumstance" were reported many times, the US Navy was forced to relieve the stress of the pilots. So the US Navy,Bud WinterWe invited researchers and others to develop a method to relax the pilot and tested pilot candidates who attend Naval School.

Mr. Bud Winter served as a professor of psychology at the university, while also known as an Athletic coach from before the war. Mr. Winter defines that "sleep is physically and mentally relaxed", and training that "under all circumstances, you can sleep in two minutes anytime day or night" It was set as the purpose of "psychologically relaxing method" and "psychologically relaxing way" to the pilot candidates.

1. How to Physically Relax
In the beginning, Mr. Winter had the pilot candidates train the following "Physically Relaxing Method" out of the two relaxing methods.

Sit on the chair deeply, put your feet on the floor, open both knees and stretch. Place your hand between the knees. Close your eyes and pull the chin up so that it fits on your chest. Slowly deeply, while taking a deep breath at regular intervals, I consciously make all facial muscles loose. Do not wrinkle between the eyebrows, relax your tongue and even your lips, be careful not to put your power on the muscles around your eyes.

And, by removing power from the shoulder, the muscles behind the neck are dropped so tightly that it seems to paralyze. While imagining that I am "a jellyfish that hangs on a chair", I will loosen the muscles of the whole body with deep breathing. As we speak to all the muscles in turn, such as the left and right upper arm, calves, football and so on, we will consciously overcome our efforts. If you have muscles that you can not get out of your mind, loosen the muscles once you've tightened your muscles and then tense them on purpose.

After repeating these, let the whole body loose, and finally take a deep breath slowly three times. It is said that the body can be completely relaxed and ready to go to sleep.

2. How to relax mentally
Mr. Winter claims that "If you can physically relax, you can sleep in 10 seconds." However, it seems not good to think about "there is movement" in that 10 seconds. For example, if you move the arm in the brain, the arm muscles become tense even if they do not actually move, but if you imagine that there is movement, physical relaxation is lost I will. In order to eliminate moving images, the following three image training is proposed by Winter's training program.

· On the spring day, keep on imagining the appearance of lying in a canoe on a quiet lake looking up at the blue sky
· I imagine the situation being shaken by a huge black hammock in the dark
· Let me tell myself "I'm not thinking anything"

Mr. Winter insists that it is important to continue to do more than 10 seconds in any case.

At the Naval School, a comparison test was conducted divided into two courses, one to receive relaxed training and one to train the spirit thoroughly. As a result, it seems that the course which received the relaxed training was giving good results in various tests and training. And with 6 weeks of training, 96% of the pilots are able to sleep anywhere anytime within 2 minutes. Moreover, it seems that it became possible to get to sleep immediately even under a noisy situation with drinking coffee or explosion or fire.

In addition, after the war, Mr. Winter transferred the same relaxing method as the one given to the navy pilot to the player who coaches himself. Mr. Winter has produced as many as 27 American athletes in the Olympic Games and is known as a legendary coach in the American athletics world now. Mr. Winter believed that the program of relaxation developed to eliminate the stress of war was sufficiently effective for ordinary people who accumulated stress and fatigue in daily life.
