Prior to May 2013, many notebook PCs used within ISS used Windows XP, which is more vulnerable to malware than Linux. According to Kaspersky, the USB that caused the infection of this ISS by malware was brought to ISS after being infected with a notebook PC using Windows. When infected with malware was brought in, the ISS control system seems to be testing various functions of Linux ahead of Linux introduction scheduled for May 2013.

In 2008, there was an incident that the W32.Gammima.AG worm lurking in the laptop that Russians brought into ISS infects laptops equipped with Windows XP in ISS at a terrible speed. Mr. Kaspersky warns that "This is not enough anti-virus measures only by not connecting the PC to the Internet" in response to the incidents occurring this time and the case of 2008.
