Seagate introduces new cloud storage "Kinetic" platform

With the spread of such cloud services, Seagate, a major manufacturer of hard disk drives, is not using conventional server-dependent storage, as the expansion of storage capacity of servers providing servers and its storage capacity becomes more important,Ethernet"Kinetic" storage platform that can be connected directly to the Internet.

The figure below shows a conventional data center system. Hardware and software are divided into several hierarchies, and efficiency is not good because data goes back and forth between the hierarchy of object-oriented applications and the hardware hierarchy based on block storage.

However, since Kinetic storage has a key-value management function, it is possible for storages to communicate with each other for data replication and movement. Also, since Kinetic storage does not have a file system directory structure, it is possible to expand capacity easily by adding storage without depending on the OS.

For this reason, storage on the Kicectic platform eliminates the need to intervene between servers.


Using server-independent Kinetic storage will make it possible to build cloud storage without being bound by Amazon and Microsoft that provide cloud storage services. Seagate is currently building an open source library to introduce Kinetic storage system for developers.
